Sleep has its own life. We spend about a third of our lives asleep, yet, paradoxically, our sleeping life doesn’t seem to belong to us. We do not remember most of it, though our brain doesn’t sleep while sleeping. The banality of sleep contrasts with its enigmatic intelligibility.
Competing discourses from neuroscience, biology, psychology, social economy or simply public imagination brought this typically private ritual into the public space. Since the 70s we started to better understand the architecture of sleep and its cognitive functions.
The performative installation Volume of a Sleep references the complexities of the contemporary knowledge about sleep, through a porous space at the edge of dream and reality. Staging sleep means an audio-visual-tactile immersion into a private and unconscious space, with fragile boundaries, while creating a dialogue between physical presence, a hypnotic sensorium, and the panacea of dreams.
Constantly mediated by a membrane, the performer reclaims through soporific movements sleep’s temporal, restorative, and nostalgic dispositions, in virtue of a ritual that has been repeating itself for millions of years, in which we submit to an unchanging biological cycle.

L'Année dernière à Malmaison is a subjective foray into Malmaison’s temporalities, connecting its overlapping histories not only with the history of culture, but also with our own sensibilities, characteristic of cultural responses to both real and ideal culture.
Situated in the capital of Romania - Bucharest, the Malmaison building is 177 years old. It had a transient historical and cultural route. Former military barracks, military officers’ school, military tribunal, Secret Police Agency’s detention center from the beginning of the communist regime, a transit prison, later transformed into Iprochim - a research center in chemical engineering, Malmaison is now occupied by artists.
There seems to be a kind of a magic hour within Malmaison, even though no one seems to determine it specifically, in which one can experience the building’s stories, the byproducts of the multiple narratives of its different times. It almost seems like time and space become somehow fluid and we enter a liminal spacetime, a moment of transition of internal assumed subjectivity of the choices of human.
The exhibition’s title makes a reference to the movie L'Année dernière à Marienbad, to its long-continuous-fluid film shots (similar also with the long Malmaison’s corridors), to its ambiguous/labyrinthine narrative structure, in which time and space are somehow fluid, to its multiple intersections of multiple narratives.
″Izolarea este desprindere, individualizare, separare, singularizare, singurătate, închidere, asediere, descompunere, fracÈ›ionare, scindare, îngrădire, claustrare, temniță, recluziune, înstrăinare, carantină. Corpul în izolare este un corp liminal, a cărui memorie devine incertă, un corp dinamic, dialectic È™i în perpetuă transformare. SpaÈ›iul devine corp, corpul devine timp È™i vibraÈ›ie.
Izolare într-o serie de stări liminale propune un demers performativ, vizual È™i arhitectural, care conectează fragmente din istoria complexă a Malmaison cu situaÈ›ia corpului din prezent. Aflat într-o criză de redefinire a raportului său cu societatea, moÈ™tenirea istorică È™i pronosticurile incerte despre viitor, corpul performativ propus de artiÈ™ti este ritualic È™i tranzitoriu, într-o oscilaÈ›ie instabilă între ceea ce a fost È™i ceea ce ar putea să fie.
Pornind de la imagini, interviuri, cronici, mărturii ale corpurilor care au trecut prin Malmaison, instalaÈ›ia performativă explorează fenomenul reconstrucÈ›iei corporale, al reasamblării într-o nouă identitate. Câteodată afectivă, câteodată cinică È™i ironică, de multe ori pragmatică È™i directă, instalaÈ›ia este un potenÈ›ial organism (dis)funcÈ›ional. Lucrarea colectivă sustrage materialul kinestezic al experienÈ›ei corpului în izolare È™i îl recalibrează într-un spaÈ›iu care-È™i pierde intenÈ›ionat caracterul ceremonial, devenind o resursă accesibilă. Memoria spaÈ›iului, transpusă în score-uri pulsatile, se reînnoieÈ™te constant prin asumarea unor identități străine, care se contopesc cu schimbul de informaÈ›ie dintre performeri È™i public.
În Izolare într-o serie de stări liminale mai multe temporalități se suprapun, stări corporale familiare sunt recontextualizate istoric, lăsând loc unor fantezii despre viitor.″
